In late-February, the Hocking College Hawks esports team emerged victorious in a match over first-time opponent Dartmouth College that ended in a score of three maps to zero maps.

Team captain Nathaniel Adkins said the match was “very competitive.”

“I believe (the match) showed off the strengths of our team well and was a big win for us, seeing as Dartmouth is an Ivy League school,” he added.

The teams played the multiplayer video game Overwatch

Adkins credited the win to the team’s strategy, which he described as “play smart and at our best.”

“This strategy has allowed our team to be adaptable and cool under pressure, even in tough situations,” he explained.

What is esports?

Esports is a competitive sport involving multiplayer video games. Participants can play on an individual basis or as a member of a larger team working together.

The Hocking College esports team competes in two games: Overwatch and Rocket League. Overwatch is a first-person shooter game that involves two teams of six players each.

The Hocking College esports team currently has twenty-two members. The season runs from late January until the end of April or May. The team’s next matches will take place this week and pit the Hawks against both the Wake Tech Eagles and Central College.

The Hawks are also a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports. The NJCAAE is the only national esports association geared exclusively for two-year colleges.
