Lady Hawks Fall in Close Contest at Erie CC, 70-66

Nelsonville, OH -- The Hocking College women’s basketball team (0-5) traveled to Buffalo, NY, looking for the first win of the year, but lost to the Erie CC Kats, 70-66, on Saturday afternoon (December 14). 

The Kats came out flying, building an 11-point lead before Hocking netted its first basket on a free throw by Aleesha Tingler.  Erie held a 16-9 lead after the first quarter.  In the second quarter, Hocking found its offense and made a run at the end of the first half, but Erie still took a 34-31 lead into the break.

The Hawks controlled the third quarter and took their first lead, 42-40, at 5:58 on a three-pointer by Jasmyne Anderson. The game was either tied or the Hawks led by two for much of the quarter. Erie would regain the lead with a Jaila Payne three-pointer at 2:14 left in the quarter. The Kats held a slim 51-50 lead at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the game was tied at 60 with 4:29 left to go, before Erie went on a 7-0 run to make the score 67-60 with 1:28 to play. Erie held off the Lady Hawks for a 70-66 win.

The Kats were led by Caroline Zanghi with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Jameelah Gaines contributed 15 rebounds, nine assists and nine points. 

As a team the Kats shot 29-of-91 (31.9%) and went 6-of-27(22.2%) from deep. Erie out-rebounded the Lady Hawks, 65 to 53, and handed out more assists, 24 to 20. 

The Lady Hawks were led by freshman forward Jasmine Manuel, who scored a game-high 24 points on 11-of-18 with two triples. She recorded a team-high 13 rebounds, which ranks tied for second on the team’s all-time single-game list.   

Freshman guard Peyton Campbell added 22 points on 7-of-23 shooting with four three-pointers.  She also made 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. She recorded six rebounds, four assists and a steal. 

Freshman guard Jada Lazaro added seven assists, which ranks third on the team’s all-time list.

As a team, Hocking shot 26-of-74 (35.1%) and went 7-of-32 from three point range. Hocking had 22 turnovers.  

Hocking’s next games are on December 19th and 20th at the Anne Arundel Community College Holiday Tournament.
