Throw-a-thon makes art to fund peace

Is Spring semester bumming you out?

Do you want to give back to the community?

Or do you just want to make some bowls? 

Then come relieve some stress and help a good cause at the annual Throw-a-Thon for the Athens Area Mediation Service’s annual SOUPer Bowl fundraiser!

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, at the Visual Arts Center, Room 101 at Hocking College, 3301 Hocking Parkway in Nelsonville, Ohio. 

The free event is open to anyone who wants to hand-build or wheel-throw a bowl regardless of their skill level — if any — with clay. However, the event is not a workshop.

The bowls made at the Throw-a-Thon are donated at the Athens Area Mediation Service for the group’s annual SOUPer Bowl fundraiser. This year’s SOUPer Bowl is Sunday, March 22, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St. in Athens, Ohio.

People who attend the SOUPer Bowl can get a bowl of soup in one of the bowls made at the Throw-a-Thon for $25. Children aged 12 and under can get soup for $5, but no ceramic bowl to keep.

The March event will also have music from Tree Lined Roads Ensemble, Kensia Bush and Finn Bush. Food and drinks will be available from Donkey Coffee, Athens Bread Company, China Fortune, Crumbs Bakery, Corner on Union, The Farmacy, Jackie O’s, Lui Lui, Molina Family Bakery, Overhand, Thai Paradise, Pub, Purple Chopstix, Restaurant Salaam, Sol, Star of India, Village Bakery, Soe, Casa Nueva and Lynette Pillay.

Tickets for the March event can be purchased in advance or at the door. There’s no charge to make bowls at the February Throw-a-Thon.

Athens Area Mediation Services is a nonprofit organization that offers low to no cost mediation sessions for personal relationships, groups and organizations. It also offers mediator training.

What is Athens Area Mediation Services?

The Athens Area Mediation Service is a nonprofit organization established in the early 1990s. It provides the residents of Athens County, Ohio, with cooperative approaches to dispute resolution. AAMS is dedicated to promoting and supporting reconciliation, integrity, openness and inclusion. By training community members to serve as mediators and sharing these skills with others, AAMS empowers individuals and community groups to respond to conflict effectively. Interested in art and design?

Whether you are already an established artist or you’re just beginning to explore your artistic side, Hocking College’s Art and Design Program offers you an opportunity to develop techniques and professional skills to be competitive in your field. You’ll develop the skills necessary to become accomplished artists in the two-year art and design degree program. The curriculum is composed of two tracks, 3D studio and 2D studio. The 3D studio area includes glass and ceramics. The 2D studio offers photography, drawing and painting.

The Hocking Makers is devoted to empowering people to find their passions through introductions to tools, approachable and affordable classes, and workshop membership opportunities to pursue their interests on their own. Envisioned to help the residents of Nelsonville and surrounding communities, the Network provides a network of workshops, tools, resources, classes, connections and opportunities that help expose people to skills, careers and potential they didn’t know they had.

Although operated by Hocking College, the Network is not overtly branded as a Hocking College entity and is intended to be a self-sustaining nonprofit. The Network currently uses three locations: a welding lab in Logan, a wood lab just outside of Nelsonville and the Visual Arts Center on Hocking College’s Nelsonville campus.
