The Hocking College Experience

The Perks of Having a .edu Email Address

One of the perks of becoming a college student is automatically getting an email address ending in .edu from the school you'll attend. Unfortunately, many students don't take advantage of this fringe benefit for many reasons, such as:

  • They already have a primary email account they've been using for years.
  • They believe their hectic schedules don't provide enough spare time to keep track of an additional email account.
  • They don't want to invest themselves in an email account they'll only realistically use for a few years.
  • They would rather have all their personal and school-related emails come to one central location.

However, using email addresses that end in .edu can be beneficial to those same students:

  • Students who have their personal and school-related emails come to one central location run the risk of letting vital information get either overlooked or accidentally deleted.
  • College email accounts allow students to forward their emails easily.
  • Having a college email address gives students easy access to their instructors.
  • Any conversations students have with a fellow student or faculty member is easily documented.
  • Colleges use their in-house email systems to communicate vital information that students need to be aware of — such as policy changes or updates during a crisis like the current pandemic.
  • Instructors use college email systems to make their students aware of changes in their class schedules or deadlines that could affect their grades.
  • College email accounts are legitimate. Therefore, students can be assured that these communications are safe to open and likely won't contain any viruses.
  • College email accounts make it easy for students to remain in contact with their advisors during the summer.
  • Students who use their college email accounts demonstrate the level of commitment they've made to their education.

Having an email address that ends in .edu also unlocks many free services and discounts for students.

  • Prime Student gives college students access discounted membership to Amazon's Prime services, including free delivery, Prime Video, discounted access to Amazon Music and discounts on other products sold by Amazon.
  • Adobe offers its Creative Cloud suite of more than 20 applications, including Photoshop, Premiere Pro, InDesign, Premiere Rush, Audition and more.
  • Through a partnership with Microsoft, Hocking College receive Microsoft Office 365 Education for Students for free to users with an @hocking.edu email address. Sign up at https://portal.office.com.
