After a long semester of classes, tests, term papers, and seemingly never-ending homework assignments, the last thing most college students want to do is spend their summer vacation taking summer classes.

However, there are many advantages to taking classes during the summer months that can benefit students in more ways than one. The following are a few reasons on why taking classes in the summer is a good idea:

  • Registration is easier. Unlike the fall and spring semesters, there are less students during the summer semester and therefore students will have an easier time registering for classes.
  • Classes are fast-paced. Unlike a 16-week semester, the summer semester is crammed into 10-weeks and moves at a much faster pace.
  • Smaller class sizes. Since there are less students taking classes in the summer, this means class sizes are much smaller.
  • Accessibility. In addition to smaller class sizes, having less students also means having more access to the instructor.
  • It's a good time to get those letters of recommendation. Students will have more opportunities to get letters of recommendation from their instructors since they won't have as many students as they would during the fall or spring semesters.
  • It's a way to knock out those pre-requisites classes. All students are required to take pre-requisite classes for their program. Summer school is a great way for students to get their pre-requisites out of the way early.
  • A better way to tackle any challenging classes. Taking summer classes is a great way to tackle subjects students might find challenging. Since classes are typically smaller, you'll have more time to talk with the instructor if you end up having trouble.
  • Allows you to stay on track. Sometimes students don't realize that by failing or dropping a class can set back their graduation date by an entire semester. Taking any classes you may have had to drop or failed in previous semesters will allow you to stay on track.
  • Maintain academic momentum. Getting back in the swing of things when the fall semester rolls around can be tough. Taking summer classes will help students stay focused and maintain their academic momentum.
  • A great way to bond with others. Since summer classes are more intimate, this allows students the opportunity to get to know their classmates better and possibly make new friends.
  • Access to the College's resources & services. Even though campus is quieter during the summer semester, students will still have access to all the College’s resources and services.
  • Graduate sooner. Taking summer classes will help students not only get ahead of the game, but they'll be able to graduate sooner and save money!
