A Guide to Hiking in the Hocking Hills

The Hocking Hills is best known for its beautiful scenery, rolling hills, and relaxing atmosphere only found in Southeastern Ohio. Not only does the Hocking Hills area provide stunning landscapes and views, but it also offers different adventures to experience the wide countryside. A favorite among visitors and natives alike, hiking is one of the area’s most popular activities.

In the spirit of hiking, we have rounded up some of our favorite places to hike as recommendations for you and your family this fall.

Cedar Falls

As the home to the largest natural waterfall in the Hills, Cedar Falls is one of the most picturesque destinations in the area.

Clear Creek Metro Park

As the largest nature preserve in Ohio, Clear Creek Metro Park features 5,300 acres of woodland, trails, creeks, cliffs, and much more.

Old Man’s Cave

A favorite among locals, Old Man’s Cave includes trails along the Upper Falls, Upper Gorge, Middle Falls, Lower Falls, and Lower Gorge.

Hemlock Bridge and Whispering Cave Trail

The newest of trails, Hemlock Bridge Trail passes Whispering Cave to connect with the gorge trails leading to Old Man’s Cave and Cedar Falls.

Rock House

As the only true cave in the Hocking Hills, Rock House is a tunnel that runs midway up a cliff featuring window-like cutouts and years of historical treasures.

Wayne National Forest

The Wayne National Forest surrounds the area and includes the largest off-road vehicle trails in Ohio, as well as 300 miles of trails for mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking.

Ash Cave

Ash Cave is the largest recess cave in Ohio making it a popular tourist destination. Additionally, the trails to Ash Cave are wheelchair and stroller accessible making it fun for the whole family.

Additionally, most of these trails can be experienced along with the help of a natural interpreter and guide who will enlighten you on the trails’ history and facts. You might just learn something new!
