A degree in commercial and residential electricity can lead you in multiple directions in your career, including becoming a construction estimator, construction sales manager, purchasing manager, or an electrician. Opportunities also exist for those who aspire to manage their own businesses as independent electrical contractors.
Some of the tasks you may have includes planning layouts of construction sites; installing large and small electrical components; estimating project costs and repairs; testing and repairing electrical components; ordering materials and equipment; installing conductors through conduits and raceways; and collecting and reporting on data.
In addition, you may also be the one to make sure electrical wiring is up-to-code across the whole project site.
You'll need to be able to set a good example for your fellow crew members. Skills that you should have going into the job include the ability to solve complex problems, troubleshoot and repair, teach and instruct others, use clear & effective communication, work individually and within a team, and use good judgement.
