Cora “Sky” Roman wanted the “full” college experience when she took her first class last year.
But she wasn’t sure what the reaction would be to a 15-year-old College Credit Plus student walking into a college classroom.
Sky said she wanted her first college experience to be in-person, to get a sense of what the college experience would be like, and she chose Hocking to test that out.
“The smaller class sizes in the summer at Hocking attracted me,” the Federal Hocking High School junior-to-be said. “Everyone was welcoming, and I met some cool people. The teacher had time to talk to us one-on-one.”
After her experience in the summer, Sky — who’s a member of her high school’s marching band — decided to take more classes in the spring semester.
This time she took online psychology, sociology and art appreciation classes.
“I definitely enjoyed the in-person class, but online can be so much more convenient,” she said.
She said her teachers were “really vigilant about getting back to” students with questions.
“CCP has taught me to schedule my time,” she explained. “In high school, you have a bell and schedule. At college, it’s kind of everyone for himself. With my parents and teachers, I’ve had a lot of support. I’ve learned to manage my own time.”
While Sky’s not sure exactly what she wants to study or where she wants to go, she knows she’s going to continue taking CCP classes through Hocking College.
“I don’t know exactly what I want to do in college, but I can take general education classes now for free and lower my college cost.”
CCP is a dual enrollment program that allows Ohio students in grades 7-12 to earn high school and college credits simultaneously.
CCP classes are offered in a variety of ways. Some can be taken at your high school while others are offered online or in-person at Hocking College. Students from anywhere in the state can take CCP classes through Hocking College, a head start on their college careers before graduating from high school.
Some students can even earn an associate degree by the time they graduate from high school, allowing them to save money on tuition and textbooks while giving them a quicker route toward a college degree. Some students who enroll in the program are able to satisfy all of their high school credits with college-level general education courses and never have to physically attend classes at their high school.
The program is available for public and private school students; homeschooled students can also apply. The program is free to all public school students in Ohio. Private and homeschooled students can apply to the Ohio Department of Education for funding.
To be accepted to the program, a student must have an overall GPA higher than 3.0 or take a placement test administered on the Hocking College campus.
Registration for Autumn 2020 CCP classes at Hocking College is still possible.
