On Monday, November 5 Hocking College’s Early Childhood Education program sponsored a panel discussion in Oakley Hall called 100 Years of Teaching.
The panel consisted of teachers (pictured below, left to right) Mindy Travis, Lynn Avery, Vera Gable, and Ann Rolston. Collectively, all four women have been educators for a total of 100+ years.
Hosted by the Early Childhood Education Program Manager Susan Dietz, over 30 of her students attended and got to partake in a Q&A session with the panel members.
Some of the topics that they covered were the importance of memorization and phonics, how to communicate with parents, how to defuse tense situations, non-violent communication techniques, and how to live within your means on a teacher’s salary.
In addition, Rolston strove to convey to the students that a good teacher is “an eternal learner who never stops learning.”
When asked what career advice she had for the students, Gable theorized teachers should always smile because this “keeps the students guessing.”
According to second-year early education major Loraine Williams, this panel discussion reinforced “the importance of patience when you’re working with children and how to establish relationships with your students.”
