To Serve and Protect...

Following three months of intensive training and study, 27 graduates of Hocking College’s Police Academy were honored and recognized by the College, friends and family at a ceremony held on May 5.

Roger Deardorff, Hocking College Police Academy Commander, hosted the program. Joining Commander Deardorff in the graduation ceremony and presentation of awards and certificates were Hocking College President Dr. Betty Young; Dr. Myriah Davis, Vice President, Academic and Student Affairs at Hocking College; Dr. Penny Payne, Commander, Hocking College Public Safety Services; and Officer Carl Stump, Hocking College Police Department.

Cadet Lt. Andrew W. Love, representing the 105th academy class, gave personal insights and shared anecdotes about the training and commitment all the graduates exhibited throughout their arduous training and study at Hocking College.

In addition to awards for perfect attendance, four special awards were presented at the graduation ceremony. DelQuan Black and Donald Finley were the recipients of the Clyde Beasley Award; Brooke Moler received the Shirley Jeffers Award, and Hailey Shue was the winner of the James Walter Davis Memorial Scholarship.

Both the Clyde Beasley and Shirley Jeffers Awards recognize the top students in the academy. Criteria for both awards include leadership skills, class participation, grades and attitude.

The James Walter Davis Memorial Scholarship provides an opportunity for new officers to practice their skills, provide the Hocking College Police Department (HCPD) with increased auxiliary staff, and an opportunity to maintain commission and plan for their next duty department. The scholarship provides $1,500 to cover the cost of all necessary duty gear, which they can then keep to perform as an HCPD Auxiliary member.

Graduates of the 105th Police Academy were DelQuan V. Black, Cassandra L. Brown, Jon K. Campbell, Bryce A. Chesser, Michael L. Dundon, Bryon A. Dwyer, Donald T. Finley, Austin R. Gang, Kristopher D.
