What to Wear for a Hike in the Woods

Most experienced hikers would probably agree that the more prepared a hiker is, the more enjoyable their hike will be.

Furthermore, one of the most important preparations a hiker can take before heading out into the wilderness is to make sure they’re properly dressed. Here are a few suggestions to consider when you’re picking out your hiking attire:

  • Comfortable clothing. Wear loose comfortable clothing that will allow you to move/climb about freely.
  • Avoid denim. Avoid 100% cotton garments such as anything made of denim that will soak up excess sweat.
  • Wear layers. Layer your clothing so you can add-or subtract-things depending on how warm or cool you get
  • Proper footwear. Don’t confuse tennis shoes with hiking boots, and don't assume one can double for the other.
  • Wear white or lighter colors. During the summer go for lighter colors that will reflect heat better.

In addition, the following list represents some of the items anyone planning to indulge their passion for hiking should wear:

  • A hat that will give you coverage from the sun
  • A bandana to be worn around your neck or head
  • A water repellent windbreaker
  • A poly-blend shirt
  • Comfortable canvas/nylon pants, or long shorts
  • Wool socks
  • Hiking boots
