Originally from Carroll, OH, Spires graduated from Bloom-Carroll High School in 2016. Afterward, he attended the Fairfield branch of Eastland-Fairfield also located in Carroll, and later Hocking College.

In 2019, Spired graduated from HC with his Associate of Individualized Studies in Cybersecurity & Ethical Hacking degree, and soon thereafter accepted his current position at the school as an AmeriCorps Vista.

About AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs. Combined, these programs make up three primary programs that take different approached towards assisting and encouraging people to improve their situations and cultivate civic engagement.

Members commit their time to address the needs of their community. Some of these needs include increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, sustaining national parks and helping communities preparing for natural disasters.

Spires stated that the primary function of an AmeriCorps Vista is to “make the way for things to get accomplished.” Some of his basic outreach-oriented job duties are as followed:

  • Establish, nurture and maintain partnerships with non-profit organizations and businesses that could benefit both the Nelsonville community and Hocking College students
  • Create and distribute fliers
  • Train AmeriCorps volunteers
  • Compose blog posts
  • Creating content for social media sites
  • Promote classes being put on by the Hocking Makers Network
