8 Ways To Make Money In College

by Tim Brunicardi on September 19, 2017

Many students today are looking for an extra way to make money in college. One study found that as many as 70 percent of college students had an outside job while in school.

But for many students, a traditional job cuts into class and study schedules. While there are ways to balance that type of schedule, it isn't for everyone. If you're looking for something a little more non-traditional to help you make money in college, consider one of these eight options.

1. Tutor Other Students

Many schools have tutoring programs where more advanced students can tutor students in introductory courses. Plus, teaching others is a great way to reinforce what you've learned. Check into tutoring programs on your campus to see if you qualify.

2. Pick Up Freelance Writing

There are dozens of websites for freelance writers to pick up work online. Consider looking into a platform like Scripted, where you can apply for writing jobs in fields that you're knowledgeable in. Those freelance assignments can also be great resume builders if they're in a field related to what you're studying.

3. Post Your Talents On Fiverr

Fiverr is a catch-all site for random jobs and skills. You could make money doing commercial voice overs, writing, translating or even astrology readings. Take a look at the site to see if you have any hidden talents that could help you make money in college.

4. Use Your Art Skills

If you enjoy a craft like knitting, painting or drawing, you could make some extra cash by selling your artwork. Consider signing up for an Etsy shop or sell printed artwork on a site like Society6. It could be a great way to enjoy a hobby, de-stress and make money.

5. Drive With Lyft or Uber

If you have a car, you may already have what you need to take up a side gig as a Lyft or Uber driver. Both of these services allow you to apply digitally, making the process simple and quick, and sometimes they offer a cash signing bonus.

Once you're hired, you can sign onto the app to accept customers only when you're available, making it easy to work around your school schedule.

6. Sell Your Old Stuff

There are plenty of websites where you can sell gently used items for a profit. Sell your used clothing on Poshmark, collector memorabilia on CompleteSet or general items on eBay or Craigslist

7. Become A Dog Walker

Apps like Wag! connect dog walkers to dog owners in their area. In addition to making some extra cash, you could enjoy the outdoors and benefit from a little pet therapy between classes.

8. Sell Your Old Cell Phone

If you upgraded to a new phone and have an older version lying around, you could make money by selling it. Consider selling your old electronics on a site like Gazelle. They mail you a shipping container and pay you as soon as your phone arrives.

If you're a student at Hocking College or are planning to attend Hocking College, and you find that you'd like to have a source of income while in school, consider one of these eight non-traditional methods. They can be a great way to make money while still focusing on your classwork and studies.
