Hocking College believes in creating an environment on its campus where all students feel safe and thrive. The Rainbow Alliance Club is that safe place at Hocking. Katie Walters, the club's advisor, states the club is open to all students regardless of their sexual orientation. They welcome every goofy, straight-laced, lost, and confident student. They believe that every student has a place among those in Rainbow Alliance. It doesn't matter if you're Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual, or you want to be a better ally to your friends and family in the LGBTQIA+ community, this club is for you. It's also the perfect place to meet other students and socialize. This club participates in and organizes various social events throughout the year, including movie nights, trivia nights, discussions, and education.
Their Valentines Day Event this past February was very successful. The club created Valentines and handed them out at Hawks Nest Dining to anyone who wanted one. They also had an area set up with supplies and candy, where students could create their own Valentines. Many students, faculty, and staff participated in this event.
The Rainbow Alliance Club also believes in educating its members. Most meetings begin with members sharing an educational piece they feel is important. They've had wonderful discussions about the history and current events in the LGBTQIA+ community. Students are also free to share their own experiences.
This coming school year, the club plans on hosting Safe Zone Training. This is where students can learn more about LGBTQIA+ assumptions, gender identities, sexuality, and prejudices.
