What is Leisure Learning?

The Leisure Learning program are classes that are focused on creating a rich, creative environment that inspires life-long learning. These affordable, non-credit classes are hands-on, fun, educational, and are held in various locations, including the Hocking College campus and surrounding community. All classes are open to the public.

What Classes Are Being Taught?

From topics covering herbal healing treatments to cooking morel & ramp you found on a hike, there's bound to be a class for just about anybody. Below are the upcoming classes Leisure Learning is hosting from March through June 2019.

pruningPruning Fruit & Nut Trees 101

  • Dates: Sunday, March 3, 10
  • Times: 10AM — 1PM (3/3), 11AM - 2PM (3/10)
  • Location: Solid Ground Farm (3/3) &  Randolph Mitchel House (3/10)
  • Cost: $25
  • Description: Hocking College Adjunct Faculty Instructor & Owner of Solid Ground Farm, Weston Lombard, will lead this hands-on course for pruning fruit & nut trees. The class will cover pruning strategies for trees of all ages and sizes, the timing of cutting, and preferred tree forms for various species, tool use and maintenance, and other aspects of tree care. Participants can choose from one of the two class dates listed above.

  • Description: Take a food tour down Bourbon Street with this Mardi Gras-inspired cooking class. Our chef instructor will take you through the creation of fantastic Mardi Gras recipes, including fried

    oysters, seafood & sausage gumbo, jambalaya, beignets, and bananas foster. (NOTE: Class size is limited to 16 people and must have a minimum of 10 participants to run.)

  • Date: Saturday, March 16

  • Description: Come celebrate the Irish holiday by baking some of their notorious dishes. Participants will cook small meat-filled pies, potato and cheese rolls, roast leg of lamb seasoned with rosemary and garlic, creamed peas over new potatoes, and Guinness apple crumble. Not big into alcohol? Don't worry, it cooks out. (NOTE: Class must have a minimum of 8 participants to run.)

  • Dates: Every Tuesday, Thursday, & Sunday from March 21 — April 8

  • Description: Hocking College & the American Red Cross are teaming up to offer lifeguarding certification training, just in time to get you trained and ready for your summer job! This class provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies, as well as to provide care for breathing & cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Classes will include an online portion and testing. (NOTE: Participants must be at least 15 years of age. Hocking College students may be eligible for scholarships.)

  • Date: Saturday, March 23
  • Time: 9AM — 1PM
  • Location: Hocking College Welding Lab (30140 Iles Rd, Logan, OH 43138)
  • Cost: $75
  • Description: The Hocking College Welding Lab is offering a 4-hour Welding 'MIG' class for the hobbyist or artist who wants to learn how to weld as a craft or occupation. This class will introduce the student to 'MIG', GMAW welding. During this class, students will learn how to safely set up and start the welding machine, choose the correct gas, wire, voltage, and wire speed for the application. Students will also have the opportunity to learn techniques on a Lincoln Electric virtual welding simulation machine. Each student will have the opportunity to complete two small project pieces to take home with them. Class size is limited to 15 and participants must be 18+. (NOTE: Class must have at least 8 participants to run.)

  • Time: Wednesday dates are 6-8PM, Saturday dates are 1-3PM

  • Cost: $35 per class | $150 for 5 classes (Cost includes instruction & supplies)
  • Description: This Leisure Learning class will explore the theories and philosophies of healing, as well as the perspectives of allopathic medicine and a holistic approach.

CLASSES:

  • Gypsy Cold Care | April 10 & 13 
    Attune to the seasons and assist the body in adapting to these changes. Sample tea and remedies historically used to ease those winter sniffles like rosehip jam, elderberry syrup and pickled garlic. 

  • Herbal First Aid | April 24 & 27
    Experience various plant remedies that might be included in a green first aid kit – herbs, teas, tinctures, salves, essential oils, homeopathic medicine, and flower essences. Learn about items commonly found in a first aid kit.  

  • Tea Time | May 8 & 11
    Indulge in a traditional “cuppa” with classical finger foods while learning interesting facts about the camellia sinensis plant- history, brewing, processing and health benefits. Enjoy the delights of afternoon tea.

  • The Herbal Bath | May 22 & 25 
    There's nothing more relaxing than a warm, aromatic bath infused with herbs and essential oils. Learn how to make bath bags, bath salts, and bath/massage oils and take home a few items for your own soaking pleasure. 

  • Kitchen Cosmetics | June 5 & 8
    Pamper yourself with simple, inexpensive beauty aids that impart a radiant glow from the inside out. Bring a towel and something to hold your hair back so you can participate in the process of natural skin.

  • Mother’s Day Tea at Wabi Wellness Center | May 12 (2-4 PM)
    Join a community herbalist, Cindy Parker, as we celebrate motherhood with a fancy afternoon tea party. In addition to sipping tea, delight in dainty sandwiches, green salad, fruit trifle, and decadent chocolate torte, served on Fostoria etched glass.

    Cost is $30, but a $5 discount is available to those who register for the 5-class series. Space for this class is limited, so those interested in attending must RSVP to Cindy at hhherbals@yahoo.com.

Introduction to Kayaking

  • Description: Get ready for spring with this introduction to kayaking class held in the comfort of an indoor pool. Hocking College Faculty Instructor & American Canoe Association (ACA) certified instructor, Scott Kreps, will introduce participants to river and flat-water kayaking in the safety of a controlled environment. With an emphasis on 'challenge by choice', participants can expect to improve their comfort level in & under water; learn & refine paddling strokes; engage in self and assisted rescues; and expand personal skill levels with (rolls, strokes, braces, etc.). No experience is needed, just come prepared to learn and have fun. (NOTE: This is a 3-part series class.)

  • Description: Do you have a large trailer that's difficult to park? CDL instructor Elizabeth Gardner is offering hands-on training to learn how to pull, back, and park a trailer. Participants can bring their own trailer or they can use one that's available for the class.

  • Date: Saturday, May 4 & 11
  • Time: 9:30AM — 12:30PM (5/4) & 9:30AM - 5:30PM (5/11)
  • Location: Hocking College Distillery (105 W. Main St., New Straitsville, OH)

  • Description: Join us at the New Straitsville Distillery for a fun and informative hands-on learning experience about how moonshine is made, the different types, and the history of the process. This class will cover the use of raw materials, the principles of distillation during a bourbon run, the production of craft spirits, and a sensory tasting. This 2-session beginner class will walk you through the process of distilling corn into Bourbon, or as we call it, Moonshine. (NOTE: This is a 2-part class series and participants must be 21+. Class is limited to 12 and must have a minimum of 8.)

Morels-foundMorel & Ramp Hike + Cooking Class

  • Date: Saturday, May 4
  • Time: 10AM — 4PM

  • Description: Biologist and Ecologist, Homer Elliott, will guide participants on a walk through the foothills of Appalachia in search of morel and ramp. Homer will guide you through the forest while discussing the fundamentals of edible mushrooms and wild onions. You'll learn about the ecosystem, terrain, and other clues to increase the likelihood of finding edibles.

    After working up an appetite from the forest hike, participants will gather for a cooking demonstration led by Master Chef Vincenzo Sclama at The Lodge. Chef Sclama will share delicious recipes that incorporate the morel and ramp, as well as information about proper handling, storing, and cooking edibles. You won’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind experience! (NOTE: Class limited to 12 and must have a minimum of 8 to run. Date subject to change for the optimum foray.)

  • Description: Bring Italy to you with this Leisure Learning pasta making class! Participants in this class will dive deep into regional Italian pasta, making several types of dough from scratch. You'll learn how to use a pasta roller, as well as how to create rustic shapes by hand. On top of that, we'll dress up the pasta with divine homemade sauces and summer vegetables. (NOTE: Class is limited to 12 and must have a minimum of 8 to run.)
